Staircase Road and Campground to Temporarily Reopen for Memorial Day weekend

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 17, 2019. It is reproduced in full below.

Hoodsport, WA: Staircase Road and Campground will reopen Friday, May 24 for Memorial Day weekend. However, an additional two-week closure is necessary due to unexpected culvert repairs. The campground will be closed to overnight stays beginning Monday, May 27 and will reopen when the work is completed. For public and worker safety, the road will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians at the park boundary Tuesday, May 28 and is expected to reopen by Saturday, June 8.

Memorial Day weekend marks the beginning of the busy season. Visitors should plan to arrive early and expect very limited parking. Since the road is still under construction and has not been repaved, please drive cautiously and expect road work conditions and uneven surfaces.

Staircase Campground chip-sealing will occur sometime in June and may involve a complete closure for a three-day period (Tuesday-Thursday). This work is weather dependent and exact dates have yet to be determined.

The contract includes pavement rehabilitation, culvert replacement, paving of the overflow parking area, chip sealing of the campground, striping, sign replacement, and conduit installation.

The road rehabilitation project is a partnership between the National Park Service and the Federal Highway Administration. The $1.3 million contract was awarded to Washington State contractor Conway Construction Company, Inc. of Vancouver, WA.

For current road and travel information, visitors should consult the park website at www.nps.gov/olym and call the recorded Road and Weather Hotline at 360-565-3131.
