On the afternoon of Monday, June 10, a teen male and his friends were swimming in San Francisco Bay, at East Beach. A witness on shore reported the man was having difficulty swimming and dialed 911 at approximately 2:00 pm. First Responders included the US Park Police, US Park Rangers, US Coast Guard, and San Francisco Fire Department staff, paramedics, and fire boats.
More than 50 first responders assisted with the cooperative inter-agency search and rescue efforts at the East Beach area of Crissy Field, an area within Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
At approximately 3:30 pm, after an exhaustive search under record temperatures, the body of the 14-year- old male resident of San Francisco was recovered from the water and immediate attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
After a short closure this afternoon to allow for emergency operations, East Beach parking area was reopened. The East Beach area, as well as all areas of Crissy Field, remain open and accessible to the public.
The US Park Police is the lead agency for this investigation. The name of the teen male will not be released out of respect for the privacy of the family during this tragic event, and no further on-camera interviews will be conducted.
