CALAIS, MAINE - On Friday, August 9, the public is invited to join park rangers at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site for an early “Morning Salute" to honor Passamaquoddy paddlers as they journey past Saint Croix Island on their traditional canoe voyage from Motahkomikuk (Indian Township) to Sipayik (Pleasant Point).
After canoes have passed the island, a park ranger will share the story about the important role that the Passamaquoddy played on Saint Croix Island in spring of 1605, and the subsequent Medal of Honor they received from France in 2004 for their efforts.
Gather at 8:45 a.m. on the beach at Saint Croix Island International Historic Site, eight miles south of Calais on U.S. Route 1. Length of time will be approximately 1 to 1.5 hours. For more information, contact Meg Scheid at 207-454-3871.
Park entry is free.
