Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Saturday, Jan. 18, at 2 pm, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will present a special program at the Moccasin Bend National Archeological District. This 45-minute talk focuses on the Cherokee who fought alongside Andrew Jackson during the Creek War and takes place at the Gateway Site, near 130 Hamm Road, Chattanooga, TN 37405.
The Creek War is viewed mainly as a war between the forces of the young American Republic and the Native Creek people in what is now the state of Alabama. However, it was much more complicated, as it was actually a Civil War within the Creek Nation, with American forces intervening. In order to assist the Americans, the Cherokee Nation was called upon to provide troops. These soldiers played an integral role in the war, and it forever changed Cherokee society, both politically and culturally.
