La Junta, CO - Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, in support of the Amended Public Health Order pursuant to the Governor’s directive in Executive Orders, is announcing additional modifications to operations to support federal, state, and local efforts to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
As of March 26, 2020, Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site will offer limited services outside those that support visitor or resource protection. The following services and operations will be suspended in order to comply with the state order:
* Although the park landscape will remain open to visitors wishing to use the park trails, the fort itself will be closed to the public until further notice.
* The park staff will temporarily curtail all on- and off-site public and educational programs and special events, and no visitor services will be provided until it is deemed safe to do so by the state.
Since the park entrance gates will be closed, parking to access the trails will be limited to along State Route 194.
The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners at Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site is our number one priority. The National Park Service (NPS) is working servicewide with federal, state, and local authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic. We will notify the public when we resume full operations and provide updates on our website [https://www.nps.gov/beol/index.htm] and social media channels.
Outdoor spaces at Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site remain accessible to the public in accordance with the latest federal and state health guidance. Entry fees are being waived for visitors.
The NPS encourages people who choose to visit Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site during this pandemic to adhere to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state and local public health authorities to protect visitors and employees. As services are limited, the NPS urges visitors to continue to practice Leave No Trace principles, including pack-in and pack-out, to keep outdoor spaces safe and healthy.
Updates about NPS operations will be posted on www.nps.gov/coronavirus. Please check with individual parks for specific details about park operations.
