Point Reyes National Seashore, CA (April 15, 2020)-Next week, contractors will initiate work on a major road improvement project in Point Reyes National Seashore. This two-year, $49.1 million project is a joint effort between the Federal Highways Administration (FHWA), County of Marin, and National Park Service (NPS). The project will resurface, restore, rehabilitate, and reconstruct approximately 12.9 miles of roadway and 20.9 miles of roadway pavement preservation within the park. Time-limited delays and some area closures are expected through the duration of the project.
The work will be performed over two construction seasons from April through November. This year's initial work will include significant improvements in the accessibility and safety of two popular Point Reyes National Seashore roads-Chimney Rock and Lighthouse. In order to safely implement the project, Chimney Rock and Lighthouse access roads will be closed to all public access for approximately nine weeks. "The beginning of this project is a major milestone and is the result of years of efforts by dedicated staff from the National Park Service, the County, and the Federal Highway Administration, in conjunction with significant input by the public," said Carey Feierabend, acting superintendent, Point Reyes National Seashore.
While the park is part of a County and State Shelter in Place Health Order, the FHWA, County of Marin and National Park Service have identified this project as a critical infrastructure project and an Essential Government Activity to continue. Conducting the work and implementing closures during this time will result in reduced delay and inconvenience to the public in the future.
