National Park Service Lighting Richmond Craneway Pavilion in Celebration of 19th Amendment Centennial

Richmond, CA - In celebration of the centennial of the 19th amendment, Women’s right to vote, the National Park Service on Aug. 26, 2020 is lighting up the Craneway Pavillion smoke stack with the colors of purple and gold on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2020 starting at 7:00 PM. Purple, white and gold were the colors of the Women’s Suffrage Movement. Purple symbolized loyalty, white purity, and gold hope.

No reservations are required. Observers may view the Craneway lighting from Lucretia Edwards Shoreline Park. Lucretia Edwards Shoreline Park is located at 1500 Marina Way South Richmond, CA 94804.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the 19th Amendment on May 21, 1919, and the Senate passed it on June 4, 1919, sending it to the states for ratification. Three-fourths of the states--36 at the time--would need to ratify the language for it to become part of the U.S. Constitution. Tennessee became the 36th on Aug. 18, 1920, and the U.S. Secretary of State certified it on August 26.
