Temporary Closures of Portage Lakefront on Weekday Mornings and Afternoons

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 6, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK: Under the authority of 36 CFR 1.5(a), the Superintendent will temporarily close the Portage Lakefront location at Indiana Dunes National Park so a work project can be completed safely.

Beginning on May 10th, the entire Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk site will be closed from 7:00 am - 4:00 pm on weekdays so large trucks and equipment can safely deliver and install boulders needed to shore up the accessible ramp west of the pavilion. The area, with the exception of the ramp under construction, will reopen to the public each weekday at 4:00 pm and remain open until its normal closing time of 11:00 pm. Weekend operations at Portage Lakefront will not be affected. In addition, the site’s food vendor, Trail Stop, will be open on weekends as well as Thursdays and Fridays after 4:00 pm.

The work is expected to take up to three weeks and should be completed before the Memorial Day weekend. Due to the nature of the project some modifications to the closure could occur. Check the park’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/IndianaDunesNPS or call the information desk at 219-395-1882 for updates.

There are several other nearby national park beaches that can be used while Portage Lakefront is closed, including West Beach located just north of the intersection of US Highway 12 and County Line Road in Portage.
