The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 21, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

TUSKEGEE, Ala. - Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site (TUAI) is offering a socially-distanced group bike ride at 3 p.m. (CDT) on Memorial Day, May 31, 2021, at Moton Field to honor fallen Tuskegee Airmen. No registration is required, just show up to ride.

Participants will be greeted by a park ranger on the tarmac at historic Moton Field between Hangars 1 and 2. The ride will begin with a ranger program, emphasizing the importance of Memorial Day and its solemn connection to the Tuskegee Airmen. Sixty-six fighter pilots trained at Moton Field were killed in action during World War II.

Riders are asked to bring bikes, helmets, water and sunscreen for the ride. There are no bicycle rental options in the area. The route stretches from Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site to Tuskegee Lake, and back (approximately eight miles). Terrain is paved and moderately challenging. The ride ends with a flag lowering ceremony taking place in the parking lot overlooking the historic site. The entire event will last about two hours.

Presently, the historic structures within the park remain closed due to the pandemic. However, we encourage you to join us as we honor the memory and legacy of all Tuskegee Airmen who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their country.

Tuskegee Airmen National Historic Site, a unit of the National Park Service, was authorized by Congress in 1998. It was established to commemorate the struggle and triumph of the Tuskegee Airmen at Moton Field, site of the primary African American flight training facility during World War II, and their contributions to the integration of the U.S. military and subsequent civil rights advancements.
