Access to the Volcanoes Day Use Area closed on Thursday, August 5, 2021

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 4, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Purpose

On Thursday, August 5, 2021, visitors to Petroglyph National Monument will experience intermittent road closures adjacent to the Monument. These closures will prohibit access to the Volcanoes Day Use Area of the Monument between 7:00am and 3:00pm.

Background

The city of Albuquerque is hosting the Masters Road National Championships. Time trials will take place on Atrisco Vista Boulevard and Paseo Del Norte Boulevard adjacent to the Monument. Albuquerque Police Department will close these roads from Interstate 40 to Rainbow Boulevard. Due to these road closures, areas of the Monument, primarily the Volcanoes Day Use Area will be inaccessible to visitors.

Authority

Title 36 Code of Federal Regulations section 1.5 authorizes the Superintendent to close an area of the park for public health and safety measures. As the road closures near the Monument boundary restrict access for visitors and emergency service vehicles, the Volcanoes Day Use Area will be closed to visitors on August 5, 2021 between 7:00am and 3:00pm. Times are approximate and are dependent upon the conclusion of the event.
