Heritage Hike to mark President James A. Garfield’s 190th birthday

The James A. Garfield Heritage Hike will take place Saturday, November 13 to mark the 190th birthday of President James A. Garfield. He was born in Orange Township (now Moreland Hills) on Nov. 19, 1831.

The full hike is 12.5 miles and begins at 8:45 a.m. at the Moreland Hills Historical Society, located at 4350 S.O.M. Center Road in Moreland Hills. Hikers will walk through Orange Village, Pepper Pike, Beachwood, Shaker Heights, and Cleveland Heights before arriving at the Garfield Memorial in Lake View Cemetery (12316 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland) around 2 p.m. The annual wreath-laying ceremony at the Garfield Memorial, President Garfield’s final resting place, will begin at 2:30 p.m.

The hike is open to the public but limited to 25 hikers; registration is required. Please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/james-a-garfield-heritage-hike-tickets-191936666737 to register for the hike. You may register for the full 12.5 miles or for a shorter 2.5 mile hike. Registration is free.

The Garfield Heritage Hike is a partnership event between James A. Garfield National Historic Site, the James A. Garfield Alliance, and the Lake View Cemetery Foundation.

James A. Garfield National Historic Site is located at 8095 Mentor Avenue (U.S. 20) in Mentor, Ohio, approximately 25 miles east of Cleveland. The site offers guided tours of the Garfield home, museum exhibits, a biographical film, walking paths, and two self-guided outdoor cell phone tours. The National Park Service completely restored the house in the late 1990s, making it one of the most impressive presidential homes preserved for the public.
