Roosevelt AZ - Tonto National Monument invites the public to assist with the collection of bird species data for the National Audubon Society’s 122nd Annual Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021. Pre-registration is not required. This drop-in event is free and open to the public. Orientation and guiding will be available 8am to 3pm. We ask that participants plan to observe for 2 hours.
Anyone wishing to participate should meet with park staff at the Visitor Center between 8am to 3pm. Bird identification guides, and data recording materials will be provided. Participants should bring their own binoculars and come prepared to walk into a riparian area on an unpaved dirt trail with loose rocks. All levels of birding experience are encouraged to participate in this citizen science experience.
This is an outdoor event, where individuals will follow CDC guidelines and remain spaced at least 6 feet apart.
The Christmas Bird Count is the nation’s longest running community science bird project, and the data is used to study long-term health and status of bird populations across North America. This project helps Tonto National Monument by providing an updated species inventory.
