Justin Pattison Selected as Deputy Superintendent at Lake Mead National Recreation Area

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on June 17. It is reproduced in full below.

Justin Pattison has been selected as the next Deputy Superintendent of Lake Mead National Recreation Area after serving as the park’s Acting Deputy Superintendent since July of 2021. During this time, he facilitated the development of Lake Mead’s Low Water Adaptive Management Strategy, supported the supervision of over 250 employees and monitored internal management of the park’s budget of $19 million.

Pattison joined Lake Mead in March 2020 as Chief of Facilities where he oversaw operation, maintenance and administrative program, project and staff support for 700 miles of roadways, 47 miles of trails, 23 water systems, 487 buildings and 32 campgrounds.

Lake Mead was the fifth most visited National Park Service (NPS) site in 2021 with 7.6 million visitors who came to enjoy America’s first and largest national recreation area. Lake Mead provides $482 million in economic output to local gateway economies that surround the park’s 1.5 million acres and stretches across 2 states and 2 lakes.

A civil engineer by training, Justin brings a wealth of experience to the position since beginning his career with the NPS in 2012. He started as a Project Manager at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks where he oversaw technical and professional services associated with planning, design, construction and maintenance of park assets including power systems, interpretive media and concession operations.

Pattison then served as Deputy Chief of Facilities at both Grand Canyon and Rocky Mountain National Parks where he directed multi-million dollar operational and maintenance and asset management services supporting Federal Lands Recreation Enhancement Act projects. He also oversaw EEO and staff service processes for employee training, conduct, development and retention efforts.

“I’m thrilled to continue working with Lake Mead’s staff and partners to provide diverse public recreation that preserves the cultural, historical, economic and environmental significance of this magnificent park," says Pattison.

Justin is a 2016 graduate of the NPS Facility Manager Leaders Program and currently serves in the Navy Reserves as a Civil Engineer Corp Officer. When not in the office, he can be found exploring the outdoors with his wife or spoiling his dogs.

Pattison will fill the position formerly held by Brenda Todd, the current acting Superintendent of Badlands National Park.
