Greenbelt Park to remain closed following July 12 windstorm

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 5. It is reproduced in full below.

GREENBELT, Md. - The National Park Service is extending the closure of Greenbelt Park out of concern for public safety following a significant windstorm on July 12. The park will remain closed until the NPS clears fallen or hazardous trees and completes a thorough safety assessment. The closure includes all trails, picnic areas and campgrounds.

“The safety of our visitors and staff is our absolute first priority," Tara D. Morrison, National Capital Parks - East Superintendent said. “Our crews have been working with determination to clear hazardous trees and we look forward to welcoming visitors back to Greenbelt Park."

Since the storm, NPS crews have removed more than 50 fallen or hazardous trees. Damage caused by the windstorm in Greenbelt Park was significant due to the storm’s intensity concentrated in the park area. Trees with shallow-roots throughout the park had difficulty withstanding the 80-plus mph wind gusts.

For closure updates, please visit the park’s Current Condition’s page or follow Greenbelt Park on Facebook.
