Sholly: 'We are very pleased to be restoring public access to the northeast corridor' at Yellowstone National Park

Northeast Entrance Road at Yellowstone National Park is open to regular visitor vehicle traffic as of Oct. 15 after a flood in June closed the entrance.

Recently opened areas include Tower Junction to the Northeast Entrance in Cooke City/Silver Gate, Mont., the National Park Service’s Oct. 13 update said.

“We are very pleased to be restoring public access to the northeast corridor just four months after the June flood event,” Superintendent Cam Sholly said in the update. “I commend the collective efforts of the National Park Service, the Federal Highway Administration and Oftedal Construction Inc. to complete this monumental task in such a short amount of time.”

In mid June, Yellowstone National Park was hit by unprecedented flash flooding that washed out roads and bridges, stranded visitors, and caused damage that took months to fix, according to an AP News report.

Visitors should be aware Northeast Entrance Road will be a construction zone for a long as weather permits, the update reported. Traffic will be permitted on the section of road on the Northeast Entrance Road near the trailhead to Trout Lake as it undergoes repairs. Short delays are expected because there will be one-way traffic through the section, the update said.

“A short section of road in Lamar Canyon will remain a paved, single lane through the winter season,” the update said. “A temporary stop light will be in place for traffic control and delays will be minimal. There will be no restrictions on the Northeast Entrance Road.”

Work such as paving and guardrail installation is being completed on the Old Gardiner Road, a limited-access road between Gardiner, Mont., and Mammoth Hot Springs, according to the update. The road will be closed to regular traffic, and is set to open by Nov. 1.

The update reported work will continue through the spring.
