The federal government, state governments, and many local governments are evaluating the impacts of climate changes on built systems and infrastructure-roads, energy, electricity, telecommunications, and water-that are critical to functioning communities, government activities, and public health and safety. During this webinar, attendees will hear from several federal agencies about their assessments of climate change impacts on the built environment, planning efforts under way to mitigate those impacts, and implementing resilient systems to protect key infrastructure. This webinar is the second in the four-part “Climate Change Impacts and Indian Country" webinar series.

The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled “Pneumatic Control Retrofits Best Practices and Optimal Air-Side Control Peer Exchange" on Thursday, April 10, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The webinar presenters will discuss converting from pneumatic controls to direct digital control for HVAC systems and new optimal air-side control sequences. Michael Deru of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory will host the meeting, and Mark Hydeman, of Taylor Engineering and an ASHRAE Fellow, will lead the technical discussions. Two Better Buildings Alliance members will share their successful pneumatic controls retrofit project experiences and results.

The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled “Maintenance Practices for LED Streetlights" on Monday, April 14, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Unfamiliarity with LED streetlight technology naturally prompts important questions about maintenance and reliability, and how to take these issues into account when planning and preparing for a transition to this technology. During the webinar, presenters Glenn Cooper of the City of Boston, Stephen Crume of the City of Seattle, and Patrick Batte of the City of Las Vegas will discuss their cities’ respective LED street lighting programs and lessons learned along the way, including failure rates and failure modes experienced to date and the associated best practices their programs have developed in response.

Presenters include Michael Royer of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Ralph Tuttle of Cree, and Chad Stalker of Philips Lighting.

Simon Mahan of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy will discuss the impact that modern and future turbines may have on the Southeast and lessons learned from ongoing projects. Aaron Barr from MAKE Consulting will discuss the future of low-wind-speed technology, current technology trends, and projections for the future.

The multi-agency Sustainable Communities program works to support state, local, and tribal governments in planning activities to develop their communities in more environmentally and economically sustainable ways. Developing more sustainable communities is important to our national goals of strengthening our economy and creating good jobs now, while providing a foundation for lasting prosperity, using energy more efficiently to secure energy independence, and protecting our natural environment and human health. The Energy Department will present a live webinar titled “The 2014 Farm Bill's Renewable Energy for America Program" on Wednesday, May 21, from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. The Renewable Energy for America Program (REAP) provides grants and loan guarantees to farmers, ranchers, and rural small businesses and rural electric cooperatives to install energy efficiency and renewable energy technologies. During the webinar, Andy Olsen, a Senior Policy Advocate for the Environmental Law and Policy Center, will describe the funding allocated to REAP in 2014, eligible recipients and technologies, application deadlines, and how to submit a complete application. In addition, Charles Newcomb, Director of Technology for Endurance Wind Power, will provide an industry perspective on the Farm Bill.

During the webinar, participants learned about the top 10 resources the Clean Cities Technical Response Service uses to answer common questions related to alternative fuels, advanced vehicles, and other petroleum-reduction strategies. The presentation also provided a brief overview of popular Alternative Fuels Data Center tools as well as resources available from the national laboratories, other federal agencies, and industry.
