The Energy Department announced winners of its seventh annual Next Generation LuminairesTM (NGL) design competition for indoor and outdoor lighting during the LIGHTFAIR® International trade show in New York.
The competition, sponsored by the Energy Department, the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America and the International Association of Lighting Designers, was launched in 2008 to promote technological innovation and excellence in the design of energy efficient light-emitting diode (LED) commercial lighting fixtures, or “luminaires." Solid-state lighting (SSL), which includes LED and organic light emitting diode (OLED) technologies, has the potential to save Americans $26 billion annually in energy costs by 2030.
A panel of 18 judges from the architectural lighting design community evaluated the entries based on characteristics such as color, illuminance, glare control, light distribution, serviceability, value, appearance, dimming control, lumen maintenance and efficiency.
Twenty-eight products - 20 for indoor use and eight for outdoor use - were recognized by the Department for meeting the competition’s rigorous requirements. These winning products represented a wide range of manufacturers and lighting applications: pendants, wall washing, downlights, troffers, industrial, parking lot, roadway, pedestrian, parking garage and bollards.
Twelve entries were designated as Outstanding in one or more evaluation categories:
* Selux Corporation (Highland, New York): Awarded Outstanding for Dimming for its Kju decorative pendant luminaire, Outstanding for Serviceability for its M36 LED My White color-tuning luminaire, and Outstanding for Versatility for its Olivio LED Sistema 2 pole-mounted pedestrian-scale luminaire.
