A site manager from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Legacy Management (LM) gave a presentation to the Nevada Site Specific Advisory Board (NSSAB) in Beatty, Nevada, on Jan. 17, 2018. The NSSAB comprises community leaders who are delegated public oversight and liaison functions in the local community surrounding the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS), also known as the former Nevada Test Site, and the Tonopah Test Range.
Newly seated NSSAB members asked LM to provide the informational briefing. The presentation featured an overview of LM’s history and mission, with emphasis on the Project Shoal Area and the Central Nevada Test Area-former nuclear testing sites outside of the NNSS for which LM holds responsibility. The DOE Office of Environmental Management (EM) followed with a presentation on four additional project areas on the former Tonopah Test Range that are of interest to the NSSAB. The board discussed and made a recommendation on how the sites should be handled after cleanup is completed followed EM’s presentation.
