Hanford Moves Closer to Tank Waste Pretreatment

The following press release was published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy, Office of Environmental Management on Jan. 19, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

RICHLAND, Wash. - EM’s Office of River Protection made another step toward pretreatment of tank waste on the Hanford Site. Workers with Hanford contractor Washington River Protection Solutions recently installed three ion exchange columns and two filter assemblies at the Tank Side Cesium Removal system. This equipment will provide a safe and efficient near-tank treatment technology to remove radioactive cesium from tank waste. The resulting treated waste will then be fed directly to the Low-Activity Waste Facility at the Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant to be vitrified, or immobilized in glass. Testing of the equipment is scheduled to begin in a few weeks.
