The United States thanks the Special Rapporteur for his analysis of the connection between the informal economy and contemporary forms of slavery and displacement.
We appreciate the report’s conclusion that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to addressing the linkages between human trafficking and a State’s economy and underscore the recommendation for providing access to justice for all trafficking survivors.
The Biden-Harris Administration has continued to hold perpetrators of human trafficking accountable, signing a National Security Memorandum to address forced labor in the fishing industry; eliminating the federal statute of limitations to file a civil action for minor victims of offenses, including human trafficking; and supporting the United States Trade Representative’s Office of Labor Affairs to secure labor rights through the monitoring and enforcement of trade agreements.
How can States best work with organizations to help offer the services informal economy workers need to become more formalized in our economies and thus benefit from enhanced protections against labor abuses?
