The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and a Tribal university in Kansas are partnering to promote environmental collaboration and career opportunities.
A five-year memorandum of understanding formalizing the partnership between Haskell Indian Nations University and the EPA Region 7 was signed Oct. 19, according to a news release. The MOU was signed by EPA Region 7 Administrator Meg McCollister and Haskell Interim President Julia Good Fox in the university's auditorium.
"We are so excited to continue our longstanding and fruitful history with Haskell Indian Nations University," McCollister said in the news release. "We've been partners for more than 20 years, and our newest MOU carries on that tradition of working on community-driven events and programs that support equity in education and environmental justice, while maintaining federal respect for tribal sovereignty."
The MOU affirms the university's partnership with EPA, which long has been a good thing for Haskell students, Good Fox said in the news release.
"This reaffirmation of the partnership between Haskell and the EPA will continue to provide excellent opportunities for our undergraduates," Good Fox said. "After the uncertainty of the past couple of years, we are truly excited to honor the importance of the MOU. The projects and initiatives from our partnership clearly reverberate beyond the university campus."
This latest MOU includes eight areas for collaboration and partnership, the release reported. Areas include joint research projects, faculty research participation, student internships and employment preparation, technical assistance, mini-courses/lectures/seminars, an outreach program, mentorship and environmental student initiatives.
