Walsh: 'Economy continues to produce steady, stable job growth'

U.S. Secretary of Labor Marty Walsh said 261,000 jobs were added to the American economy in October, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Unemployment rose to 3.7% from 3.5% in September, continuing the near-historic lows recorded for the past several months, according to a Labor Department news release issued Nov. 4.

“With an average of 289,000 jobs added per month over the past three months, this economy continues to produce steady, stable job growth that benefits workers and their families,” Walsh said, according to the release.

Job gains in October were broad-based across many industries, Walsh said, with notable growth in manufacturing and healthcare. The historic resurgence of manufacturing continued with the addition of 32,000 jobs in October, the release reported. It now provides 137,000 more jobs than before the pandemic. Hospital employment, doctors’ and dentists’ offices and nursing homes increased employment, picking up 53,000 more jobs in October.

“The overall economy grew at an annual rate of 2.6% in the third quarter of 2022, and the unemployment rate for much of this year has hovered near historically low levels,” Walsh said, according to the release.

Along with job-creating investments in infrastructure, manufacturing, clean energy, healthcare and more by the Biden-Harris administration, the Department of Labor keeps its focus on helping workers succeed and on improving job quality he said, the release reported.
