Vietzke: New Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area superintendent ‘has extensive experience’

The acting superintendent of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area has officially been named its new superintendent.

Doyle Sapp had been acting superintendent of the recreation area that includes both Pennsylvania and New Jersey since August, a Nov. 4 National Park Service news release said.

“Doyle has extensive experience managing complex parks and engaging with employees,” Gay Vietzke, National Park Service northeast regional director, said in the release. “He has a proven track record of working with the community and stakeholders to build strong foundations for success. Doyle is a caring and thoughtful manager who is ideally positioned to serve the needs of the park.”

Sapp has a 29-year career with the National Park Service, including more than 12 years as a superintendent, according to the release. He came to his new position from Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site, both in Richmond, Va. He also worked in various superintendent positions in North Carolina and Alabama.

“He has served on several NPS regional leadership councils and has worked extensively to build key partnerships and expand collaboration with Tribal governments,” the release said. “Prior to joining NPS, he served as a police officer in his hometown of Americus, Ga., in the 1990s.”

Sapp said he looks forward to leading the recreation’s area staff and collaborating with partners and community members “to help preserve this special place so that others can reflect and be challenged,” the release reported.

"We often talk about the power of place in the National Park Service,” Sapp said in the release. “Since coming to the Delaware River Valley, with its powerful natural beauty, its tremendous opportunities for recreation and its rich cultural history, I have found a place that offers both reflection and challenge.”

Sapp, and his wife Noelle, will move to eastern Pennsylvania after the new year, according to the release
