Today in Ukraine, Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield, U.S. Representative to the United Nations, announced that the United States, through the U.S. Agency for International Development, will provide $25 million in winterization assistance to help vulnerable people in Ukraine survive the winter ahead.
“With winter fast approaching, we understand the importance of helping Ukraine keep homes warm and the power on,” said Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield during a visit to a collective center housing internally displaced people in Irpin. “Russia’s missile and drone attacks have threatened to leave far too much of Ukraine without power and water. As temperatures plummet, Russia is attempting to turn this dark situation dire. We cannot allow that to happen.”
Attacks by Russian forces have damaged housing and critical infrastructure across Ukraine, drastically increasing humanitarian needs as winter approaches. This additional assistance will help vulnerable Ukrainians, particularly in hard-hit eastern Ukraine, through multi-purpose cash assistance, shelter support, and water, sanitation, and hygiene assistance.
Since Russia launched its unprovoked full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the United States has provided more than $1.5 billion in humanitarian assistance to support conflict-affected people inside Ukraine and those fleeing to neighboring countries. We will continue to stand with the people of Ukraine and provide assistance to those whose lives have been upended by Russia’s brutal and senseless war.
