The U.S. State Department announced the transition to only printing the new Next Generation Passports (NGP) has officially been completed, meaning anyone who applies for a U.S. passport will be receiving the new and improved NGPs.
The new passports include improved security features and updated artwork. NGP passports are only for passport books at this time, the State Department said on its website.
“We have completed the transition to printing only Next Generation Passports — a modernized book with new technologies and security features like a polycarbonate data page and laser engravings. All passport types remain valid until their expiration date,” Travel- State Dept. said in a Nov. 21 post on Twitter.
The State Department recently announced its success in transitioning to only printing the new NGP. The State Department’s website said it first began issuing NGPs in 2021. The NGPs utilize new technologies to make a more “robust passport with enhanced security features.” The new passports will feature a polycarbonate data page, laser-engraved personalization and updated artwork.
Though the NGPs offer a modernized U.S. passport book, U.S. passport cards have not been upgraded. The State Department said it will soon upgrade and modernize the document. Despite the transition to the NGPs, current passports, including the passport card, will remain valid until their assigned expiration date and will be upgraded to the NGPs when a person renews their passport.
A QR code sticker will be placed on the pack of the new passports, according to the State Department. The code will link to the department’s travel website and is intended to provide travelers with quick and easy access to important passport and travel information. While the stickers are optional and can be removed, the DOS has recommended keeping it on. The QR code stickers are identical on every passport and don’t contain any personally identifiable information. The DOS has also stated the stickers will not change the way border officials, airlines and others review the passport.
