U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm outlined to attendees of the 27th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP27) in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt, how the U.S. Department of Energy is America’s “Solutions Agency” through its Energy Earthshots Initiative.
Granholm, in delivering opening remarks at the Department of Energy’s “U.S. Energy Earthshots: Decadal Goals to Power the Clean Energy Transition” COP27 Event, also announced plans for summits in 2023 on new geothermal, floating offshore wind and industrial heat Energy Earthshots, a Nov. 15 DOE news release said.
“We see big, audacious challenges like the climate crisis and we create bold, ambitious and achievable goals to tackle them,” Granholm said, according to the release. “That’s exactly why we launched our Energy Earthshots initiative last year.”
Granholm announced the U.S. will collaborate with Australia, Austria and other partner countries through the Mission Innovation Net-Zero Industries Mission to create solutions for clean steel, cement, chemicals and more, the release reported.
“We need partnership and collaboration — from folks all over the world — to meet these targets for the benefit of all humanity,” Granholm said in the release.
Granholm added she hoped everyone could attend the summits on the new Energy Earthshots: geothermal, floating offshore wind and industrial heat, according to the release.
Granholm said talks would resume during the rest of the session “about what that partnership and collaboration could look like — and what achieving these Earthshots would mean for communities and industry,” according to the release.
“A whirlwind week in Egypt this past week, meeting with global leaders and innovators to collaborate on a vision for a just, equitable, accessible clean energy transition for everyone — and I couldn’t be more grateful than to have this incredible @ENERGY team by my side. Thank you,” Granholm said in a Nov. 21 post on Twitter.
