Baker: Foreign fugitives hiding in the area find ‘no safe haven in southeast Texas’

A fugitive who was wanted in his home country of Honduras for murder, attempted murder and illicit associations has been removed from the United States.

Rony Roberto Lagos-Corrales, 35, an unlawfully present Honduran national, was removed Nov. 18 by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston, ERO Honduras and the Security Alliance for Fugitive Enforcement, a Nov. 22 news release said.

“Foreign fugitives who flee criminal prosecution in their home country with hopes of hiding out in the ERO Houston area of responsibility will quickly find that there is no safe haven in southeast Texas for wanted criminals,” Matt Baker, acting field office director for Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston, said in the release.

Lagos-Corrales was released May 16, 2018, from ICE detention on an immigration bond after being taken into custody April 26, 2018. Lagos-Corrales became a fugitive after he didn’t attend immigration hearings. On May 20, 2019, an immigration judge ordered him “removed to Honduras in absentia.”

“On Sept. 15, ERO Houston officers encountered Lagos-Corrales at the Brazoria County Jail in Angleton, Texas, after he was arrested on local charges and an immigration detainer was lodged with the jail,” the release said. “On Oct. 4, the Brazoria County Sherriff’s Office released Lagos-Corrales into ERO Houston custody. ERO Houston removed Lagos-Corrales to Honduras Nov. 18 with assistance from ERO Honduras and SAFE.”

Baker praised the work of immigration officers, according to the release.

“Our immigration officers work closely with their state and local counterparts and are uniquely trained to track down unlawfully present foreign fugitives to repatriate them to their home country to face justice for the crimes they are alleged to have committed,” Baker said in the release.
