Des Moines, Iowa-The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is implementing new carry-on baggage security procedures at Des Moines International Airport (DSM).
Last summer, TSA announced that it would phase-in the implementation of stronger screening procedures for electronics larger than a cell phone in carry-on bags at airports around the country.
“At Des Moines, we have already started implementing these new procedures," said TSA Regional Public Affairs Manager Carrie Harmon. “Passengers in some lanes are now being asked to remove electronics larger than a cell phone from their carry-on bags. We will fully implement these new rules at Des Moines after the first of the year."
In addition, TSA officers sometimes will suggest that passengers remove other select items, including food, from their carry-on bags. This is not required, but helps X-ray operators get a clearer view of the contents of the bag. TSA officers are stationed in front of some DSM checkpoint lanes to guide passengers through the process and recommend how best to arrange their carry-on items for screening. We encourage passengers to listen closely to the instructions given by TSA officers at the checkpoint.
There are no changes to what travelers can bring through the checkpoint. Food and liquid items that comply with the 3-1-1 liquids rule, electronics, and books continue to be allowed in carry-on bags. The stronger security measures do not apply to passengers enrolled in TSA Pre✓® who are using those lanes.
