The U.S. Department of Energy will host a webinar Feb. 1, 2023, to solicit feedback on the department’s proposed rulemaking to raise the minimum lightbulb efficiency level from 45 to more than 120 lumens per watt for common bulbs.
The Department of Energy proposed the rule for stronger efficiency standards for light bulbs to conserve energy and cut energy bills, a Dec. 19 news release said.
“Today’s announcement is the latest in a series of more than 110 energy efficiency actions taken by the administration to help lower energy costs and keep money in the pockets of American families while reducing our nation’s carbon footprint,” U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said in the release. “With these unprecedented actions, President Biden is again displaying his strong commitment to strengthening U.S. leadership in the race towards a clean energy future and is continuing to use all the tools at our disposal to deliver safer, healthier communities for the American people.”
Department of Energy estimates that the proposed requirements would lead to a decrease in emissions of 131 million metric tons of carbon dioxide and 903 thousand tons of methane over 30 years, the release reported.
“DOE’s Building Technologies Office implements minimum energy conservation standards for more than 60 categories of appliances and equipment,” the release said.
