The United States and Secretary of State Antony Blinken have welcomed a UN Security Council resolution that sent a message to Burma’s military command to end its repression and brutality against civilians.

Resolution 2669 seeks to sends a message from the international community, calling on the Burmese regime to end violence and release arbitrarily detained prisoners. The UN members want Burma, more recently known as Myanmar, to allow unhindered humanitarian access, protection of minority groups, and for the military leaders to respect the will and democratic aspirations of the country’s people, Blinken said, according to a State Department release issued Wednesday.

“The @UN Security Council's adoption of a resolution on the crisis in Burma is a strong message that Burma's military regime must respect human rights. This is a clear call to end the violence and seek a peaceful return to the path of democracy,” Blinken said in a tweet.

Additional sanctions were imposed on five Burmese individuals and five entities in response to the military regime's inhumane acts in Burma, according to a State Department release March 25. Military security forces have detained more than 13,000 people, imprisoned former government leaders and broken up peaceful demonstrations with brutal and sometimes lethal force.

Blinken said the military regime will target any person, regardless of ethnicity, religion, gender, or age, for the coup to maintain its grip on power.

The U.S supported Gambia, which brought the case against Burma regarding these atrocities before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on Feb. 21, according to an ICJ report

In its judgment, the International Court of Justice rejected objections raised by Myanmar and called for The Republic of the Union of Myanmar to take all measures within its power to prevent violent and deliberate acts against the Rohingya people.
