Valdez: Prescribed fire burn near Scipio will have ‘firefighter and public safety being our No. 1 priority’

The public will be required to stay out of an area where a prescribed fire burn will take place Jan. 4-31 along U.S. Highway 50 near Scipio, Utah, in Millard County.

The project, which will reduce community wildfire risk and improve ecosystem health, will be conducted through the Bureau of Land Management West Desert District Fire and Fuels program, a Dec. 21 news release said.

“Fire personnel have been working with fuels management specialists to thin and to remove dense vegetation to reduce the threat of high severity, high intensity wildfire to the public,” Acting West Desert District Fire Management Officer Erik Valdez said in the release. “Crews will conduct ignitions to burn the piles of debris and monitor the prescribed fire operation with firefighter and public safety being our No. 1 priority.”

The area under the prescribed burn notice, which is dependent on weather, is located approximately five miles southeast of Scipio on the east side of U.S. Highway 50. Piles of brush and trees on approximately 150 acres of public land will be burned, according to the release.

Scipio residents and the public should expect smoky conditions in the area and should be cautious as they travel, the release said.
