Matuszewski: ERO works to oust people hiding in the U.S. 'to avoid prosecution from their home countries'

A Peruvian national in the U.S. illegally was removed from the country by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations for crimes committed in his homeland.

According to a Dec. 30, 2022,  news release, ICE officials and ERO deportation officials placed Giovani Danti Gamarra-Puertas, 63, on a chartered flight from San Diego to Lima, Peru, where he ultimately was turned over to authorities there.

“ERO San Diego deportation officers are committed to preventing dangerous individuals like Gamarra-Puertas from entering our communities through illegitimate claims to avoid prosecution from their home countries,” Jamison Matuszewski, field office director for Enforcement and Removal Operations San Diego, said in the news release. “This field office will continue to identify, and perform all necessary checks to assure that individuals who try to circumvent our immigration laws are found out and removed.”

According to the news release, Gamarra-Puertas was apprehended in June 2022 after he illegally entered the country near Calexico, Calif.

The news release also reported records show Gamarra-Puertas was the mastermind of Los Destructores, a criminal group engaged in murders, kidnappings and robberies in Peru. He also had ties to other criminal organizations in Peru.
