Readout of Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield’s Meeting with Guinea Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló

U.S. Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield met today with Guinea Bissau President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and welcomed him to the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit. 

The Ambassador and President Embaló discussed matters of security and governance in West Africa in his purview as the chair of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), including the political transitions in Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Mali, and the destructive role of Wagner forces in the Sahel. 

Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield also shared her concern about the impact of Russia’s war in Ukraine on Africa and asked that African countries take a stand against an attack on the UN Charter.
