Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo recently announced a $2.4 million grant awarded to the county of Mahoning, Ohio.

The aim of the Economic Development Administration funds is to support the Mahoning Avenue Industrial Corridor Upgrade project, which includes upgrades and repairs to roads and drainage systems, according to a Jan. 5 Commerce Department news release.

“President Biden is committed to supporting communities across the country as they work to grow their local economies,” Raimondo said in the release. "This EDA investment will provide the infrastructure to facilitate a safe and efficient transportation system to serve the region’s manufacturing and energy sectors.”

The funding is part of the department’s goal of supporting job creation and economic expansion in the area, the release reported.

Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development Alejandra Castillo said the EDA was pleased to support Mahoning County in its work to improve vital roadway infrastructure, according to the release. He said it will spur business and job growth by enhancing the primary industrial and commercial zone in the county.

“Ohio communities face a heavy burden when they have to pay to upgrade local infrastructure. Thanks to this investment, Mahoning County will be able to repair critical roadways while creating jobs and attracting new investment,” Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, said, according to the release.
