Keller: Conference presentation ‘was a great opportunity to highlight’ work, planning at long-term disposal sites

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management’s first-time participating in the Council of State Governments Midwestern Radioactive Materials Transportation Committee in October 2022 featured a presentation on the history of the Edgemont, S.D., disposal site.

According to a Jan. 5 news release, Legacy Management Site Manager Nicole Keller presented at the conference, which included multiple DOE offices, the U.S. Department of Transportation and  Tribal representative and leaders from 12 states. Keller’s presentation covered the history of the processes and work at the site and its current management.

“Overall, this was a great opportunity to highlight the amount of work and planning that goes into these long-term disposal sites, and to showcase the Edgemont site specifically as a tangible example,” Keller said in the release. “Because so much residual contamination remained in the vicinity of and at the Edgemont mill after operations ceased, DOE actively participated in the cleanup with the mill owner.”

Legacy Management’s goal at Edgemont is to sustain beneficial reuse and protect the environment and human health, the release said.

The Council of State Governments Midwestern Radioactive Materials Transportation Committee was organized in 1989, according to the release. The committee brings Midwestern states together to work with the Department of Energy on issues related to the transport of radioactive waste and materials.
