Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and Deputy Secretary Don Graves honored the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as they participated in service events in Washington, D.C.
MLK Day is the only federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service, and it honors the life of a person who fought for equality and justice, according to a Jan. 17 Commerce Department news release.
“Today and every day, we honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. As we reflect on his legacy, let us recommit ourselves to his unfinished work. It’s up to all of us to continue to fight for equality, stand up to hatred and improve communities through service,” Raimondo said, according to the release.
Graves joined Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg at Hart Middle School in Washington, D.C. They witnessed the arduous work being conducted by AmericCorps and other entities to help build and strengthen relationships with students to ensure their success. Graves and Buttigieg joined several volunteers in building a table for the school, the release reported.
“Together, we can honor Dr. King’s legacy and the work of so many others who stood alongside him to build a more equitable and just America,” Graves said, according to the release.
