Demolition has begun of a former electroplating facility in Dallas, Texas.

The Lane Plating Superfund site, 5322 Bonnie View Road, had operated for more than 90 years, conducting hard chromium and cadmium plating, according to a Jan. 19 news release. Representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Community Advisor Group members and Dallas city officials witnessed the Jan. 19 demolition.

“This action today is not only an EPA victory, it is a victory for all those who have put time and effort in making sure this community and ecosystem are free of contaminated materials,” Regional Administrator Earthea Nance said in the release. “This demolition brings the community one step closer to the removal of contamination. We want to thank all of EPA’s partners and individuals who are bringing a cleaner and greener environment to this community.”

The building’s demolition is scheduled to be completed by the end of February, the release said. The site has approximately five acres and is near a commercial and residential area.

“I am proud of the progress that our city’s partnership with the EPA has made in cleaning up one of the nation’s most contaminated sites,” U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas, said in the release. “We have made crucial steps to improve the livelihoods for the people of southern Dallas, and I look forward to continuing this work together.”
