A $794,472 grant to the Georgia Southern University Research and Service Foundation Inc. in Statesboro was awarded by the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Administration.
The aim of the funding is to expand the connection between businesses in underserved areas of Georgia and the technical assistance they need to grow and thrive, according to a Jan. 17 news release.
“Georgia Southern University plays an important role in delivering vital technical assistance to communities and businesses in Georgia as an EDA University Center grantee,” Alejandra Castillo, assistant secretary of Commerce for Economic Development, said in the release.

Georgia Southern will use the grant to expand its capacity to connect businesses and entrepreneurs in rural and underserved communities with university programs and economic development authorities. The purpose is to support business growth in a region experiencing the impact of the declining use of coal, Castillo said, according to the release.
Sen. Raphael Warnock said he was focused on securing federal resources for Georgia to keep the economy moving forward, creating jobs and supporting local businesses, the release reported. He said he was thrilled by the investments going to Georgia Southern.
“I’ll keep working to strengthen these and other critical investments in Georgia’s small business sector to help keep our economy strong,” Warnock said, according to the release.
