BLM Battle Mountain District to Conduct Prescribed Burning in the Railroad Valley Wildlife Management Area

The following press releases was published by the Bureau of Land Management on Jan. 31. It is reproduced in full below.

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev.-- The Battle Mountain District Office (BMDO) is planning to conduct prescribed burning activities during the months of February through March 2023 in the Lockes Pond and Big Well Units of the Railroad Valley Wildlife Management Area.

“The District anticipates needing one to two days of favorable weather to burn around 600 acres," said Tim Howell, BMDO Fire Management Officer. “Scheduling ahead a few months for the burn window, allows our resources and staff to take advantage of good weather and complete the project."

The prescribed fire area is 20 miles southwest of Currant, NV. The objective is to burn the existing heavy riparian vegetation to maintain the wildlife habitat of the ponds.

The prescribed burn is highly dependent on weather conditions and fuel parameters. No more than 300 acres per day will be burned in accordance with the burn plan. The burn may be postponed until a window of acceptable prescriptive conditions opens. Smoke may be visible in Currant along Highway 6. Signs will be posted along Hwy. 6 on days that burning activities will take place.

If you have any questions, or would like any additional information, please contact Tallyn Donati, Fire Operations Coordinator (775) 635-4014, or Tim Howell, Fire Management Officer. (775) 635-4114.
