Texas madrone is one of the most distinctive trees in the Chisos Mountains. Its old bark peels off in thin sheets each year, revealing smooth white bark that later turns pink or red. Red berries, which mature in November, are highly favored by deer which often rise up on their hind legs to reach them. The berries are also eaten by bear, birds, and other mammals.
