Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas made a statement on the Family Reunification Task Force and the successful reunification of more than 600 children with their families.
The statement recognizes the dedication of those who have helped reunite families separated by the previous cruel and inhumane policy and reaffirms the commitment to work toward reunifying the remaining families.
"Thanks to the tireless work of public servants across the federal government and the critical partnership of non-governmental organizations, the Department of Homeland Security and the Task Force it leads has thus far reunited more than 600 children who were separated from their families under the prior administration’s 'zero-tolerance' policy," Mayorkas said in the release.
The Task Force continues to coordinate outreach to families who were separated and is working to reunite them in the U.S. and provide behavioral health services, according to the release.
There are still 148 children in the process of being reunited with their families, the release reported. Mayorkas remains steadfast in fulfilling President Joe Biden's pledge to reunite all children separated from their families under the zero-tolerance policy. He also mentions they are working to incorporate the principle of family unity into departmental policies and operations.
The statement highlights the ongoing efforts of the Task Force to reunite families separated by the previous policy and to provide support to address the trauma they suffered, the release reported. Mayorkas recognizes the dedication of those who have already helped reunite families and reaffirms the commitment to reunite all families separated under the 'zero-tolerance' policy.
