Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said President Joe Biden imposed higher tariffs on imports of Russian aluminum one year after Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.
The increases were made pursuant to Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, as amended, according to a Feb. 24 news release. This came alongside a second round of tariff increases on Russia under the Suspending Normal Trade Relations with Russia and Belarus Act.
“The United States continues to rally the world to support Ukrainians as they defend their freedom,” Raimondo said in the release.
The tariffs on Russian aluminum were increased up to 270%, which puts more pressure on Russia as it minimizes costs in the U.S. and protects its industries and workers, the release reported. Raimondo said Biden prioritized the mitigation of how Russia’s invasion affected domestic industries critical to our national security, including the American aluminum industry.
“In imposing these tariffs, we are denying Russia an important market for its aluminum while taking a stand for America’s workers,” she said in the release. “The United States and our global alliance will continue to support Ukraine for as long as it takes. And we will continue to work to hold Russia accountable and seek justice for the atrocities being committed in Ukraine.”
