Prescribed fires planned at Hot Springs National Park

ORGANIZATIONS IN THIS STORY

Hot Springs National Park is planning to conduct a prescribed burn on portions of Hot Springs Mountain on Wednesday March 15, depending on weather conditions.

Fuel reduction is the primary reason for conducting the prescribed fire operations. Fire is a natural process to reduce the buildup of hazardous wildland fuels for the prevention and control of wildfires, to protect infrastructure, and to improve wildlife habitat.

Road and trail closures will be in effect for the safety of the public and fire staff. Portion of Fountain Street and Hot Springs Mountain Drive will be closed to traffic for a period of time. Upper Dogwood, Goat Rock, Hot Springs Mountain, Peak Honeysuckle, Floral and Shortcut Trails also will be closed. These areas will reopen as soon as it is safe to do so.

The Hot Springs Mountain Tower will also be closed on Wednesday due to the event and will reopen on Thursday, March 16th.

Although all efforts are taken to minimize smoke impacts, people who are sensitive to smoke may want to avoid outside activities on the days of the prescribed burn operation. Visitors should keep in mind that certain areas of the park may be temporarily closed to insure public and fire fighter safety.

Please be sure to follow the park’s social media page or the park’s current conditions page online for the most up-to-date information on the project.
