The United States and Turkey are working together to combat terrorist financing in the region, with the U.S. imposing sanctions on two financial facilitators for designated terrorist groups.

Sanctions are being imposed on Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham and Katibat al-Tawhid wal-Jihad, which operate in Syria, according to a May 2 news release.

"The United States continues to cooperate with the Republic of Türkiye to counter the financing of terrorist groups that perpetuate violence and instability in the region. Today, we took joint action against financial facilitators for designated terrorist groups in Syria," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a May 2 Twitter post.

The Turkish Ministry of Treasury and Finance, along with the Ministry of Interior, implemented an asset freeze against these facilitators, the release reported. This move follows a joint U.S.-Turkish action Jan. 5 that disrupted critical nodes of a key ISIS financial facilitation network.

Blinken said the U.S.-Turkish action underscores their commitment to collaborating and degrading terrorist financing networks in the region, the release reported. The U.S. will continue to take actions to disrupt the flow of funds to terrorist groups worldwide, he added.

According to the release, the U.S. continues to work closely with Turkey to counter the financing of terrorist groups, which perpetuate violence and instability in the region. Both countries remain committed to disrupting the flow of funds to these groups and will continue to take coordinated actions to ensure that they are held accountable for their actions.

“As terrorist groups continue to seek access to the international financial system, collaboration with our partners increases our ability to more effectively disrupt these facilitation networks,” Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian E. Nelson said in a May 2 Treasury Department news release. “Treasury remains committed to working with Türkiye and others in the region to disrupt the flow of funds to terrorist groups and to degrade their capacity to operate.”
