Creative agency Elara Systems uses entertaining images to normalize a sensitive issue while at the same time producing better medical outcomes in a recent animated video for a client.
The company used the NVIDIA Omniverse development platform to link 3D pipelines and create a metaverse application to develop 3D medical animation that is character-driven, it says in a news release, The company did the work as part of a collaboration with Boston Scientific and the Sickle Cell Society as a way to help youngsters facing the disease understand the importance of communicating with an adult if they believe they are showing symptoms of the illness, the news release said.
“Needless to say, this is something that could be quite frightening for a young person to deal with,” Benjamin Samar, technical director at Elara Systems, said in the news release on the company’s website. “We wanted to make it crystal clear that living with and managing this condition is achievable and, most importantly, that there’s nothing to be ashamed of.”
The company said in its news release that the video demonstrates the importance of early recognition of symptoms, including priapism, a painful, protracted erection that could lead to irreversible damage.
The company also said it uses a range of tools, from generative AI-powered Audio2Face, Audio2Gesture, the Universal Science Description (USD) Composer app, Omniverse Connections to Autodesk 3ds Max, Adobe Substance 3D Painter, and Autodesk Maya. It also used several noted 3D content-creation tools like Epic Games Unreal Engine, Blender, Reallusion iClone, and Unity to add a lifelike quality to the productions, it noted in the release.
The creative team arranged complex 3D scenes with the assistance of Adobe Substance 3D Painter to add a textured effect to its five characters for the sickle cell video. the company said. The content was pulled together in a short film with Adobe After Effects, made possible with the USD framework, the basis for Omniverse, the company said.
“USD is extremely powerful and solves a ton of problems that many people may not realize even exist when it comes to effectively collaborating on a project,” Samar said. “For example, I can build a scene in Substance 3D Painter, export it to USD format and bring it into USD Composer with a single click. Shaders are automatically generated and linked, and we can customize things further if desired.”
