U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg promoted the establishment of a new U.S.-Canada electric vehicle corridor.

Buttigieg joined Canadian Minister of Transport Omar Alghabra, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and IBEW Member Bill Baisden to announce the first Binational EV Corridor and celebrate the continued collaboration between the U.S. and Canada in leading the world towards more electric vehicle jobs, manufacturing and supply chains, according to a May 16 news release.

"The first-ever U.S.-Canada EV corridor will enable drivers to charge their vehicles all the way from Kalamazoo to Quebec City," Buttigieg said in a May 17 Twitter post. "Making, installing and maintaining those chargers and vehicles will create a lot of good, union jobs. @POTUS promised this and now we're delivering."

The corridor will utilize the existing Alternative Fuel Corridors and feature DC fast chargers every 50 miles, the release reported.

“The U.S. and Canada have long enjoyed a productive partnership on transportation issues and in that spirit, we are proud to announce the first-ever U.S.-Canada EV Corridor,” Buttigieg said in the release. “With historic investments in EV infrastructure from the Biden-Harris administration and the Canadian government, we are creating a new generation of good-paying manufacturing jobs, making it possible for drivers everywhere to reap the benefits and savings of these vehicles while helping us fight climate change.”

“Today's announcement of the first U.S. Binational EV Corridor is a huge step into the future of zero-emissions transportation and commerce,” Duggan said in the release. “This corridor will carry the flow of EV traffic, trade and manufacturing between the United States and Canada, through Detroit's international crossing with Windsor.  We owe our thanks to Sec. Buttigieg for his vision and President Biden for making this advancement possible through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.”

The corridor's establishment aligns with U.S. President Joe Biden's goal of having 50% of all new U.S. vehicle sales be electric by 2030, according to a White House statement. The Biden administration's investments in clean energy and domestic manufacturing, such as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, the CHIPS Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, have already attracted noteworthy private sector investment in EV car and battery manufacturing.
