The U.S. Department of Education recently signed a memorandum of understanding with NASA to enhance their collaboration in promoting science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education to a diverse student population.

“I am proud that our agencies will continue to intentionally collaborate to enrich STEM teaching and learning in America’s classrooms; expand access to high-quality, hands-on career, technical, and space education; increase the capacity and diversity of our nation’s STEM educator workforce; and so much more,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a May 24 news release.

Cardona expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, stating it “will inspire and prepare young people from all backgrounds to become our next generation of leaders in STEM fields.” He cited NASA's past milestones, such as the Apollo missions and the ongoing Artemis program, as potential sources of inspiration for students.

Bill Nelson, NASA administrator, echoed these sentiments in the release, remarking that “the first humans who will walk on Mars and the innovators who will help humanity reach the Red Planet are students in America's classrooms today.” He emphasized the importance of the "Artemis Generation," which includes students “from all parts of America and all walks of life,” in achieving NASA's ambitious goals.

“NASA’s work has long galvanized the world to raise the bar and reach for new heights,” Cardona said.

The agreement between the U.S. Department of Education and NASA falls in line with the Biden-Harris administration's goal to prioritize STEM with an increased focus on diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.

Both agencies are also working together on additional agreements, including one to equip the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program with NASA STEM content and technical assistance.

Additionally, NASA has provided content for two U.S. Department of Education programs, the "YOU Belong in STEM" initiative and the "Your Place in Space" student challenge.
