Becerra: Biden Administration is 'committed to improving the health of all Americans'

The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) published a study on June 27 which dealt with evidence-based strategies to promote physical activity among seniors.

“The immediate and long-term health benefits of engaging in regular physical activity are well documented. This is why it is so important for all Americans, including older Americans, to stay physically active,” HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra said in a release by the department. “The Biden-Harris Administration is committed to improving the health of all Americans, no matter their age. This report will help us support older adults in living physically active lives.”

According to the release, one in five Americans will be 65 or older by 2030, and more than 85% of elderly people have at least one chronic health issue. Physical activity has significant health advantages for the elderly, and can help control or avoid chronic diseases.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report: Implementation Strategies for Older Adults aims to help seniors achieve the recommended 150 minutes or more of moderate-intensity aerobic physical activity and 2 days of muscle-strengthening physical activity each week, the release stated.

Experts examine the guidelines for older adults every five years, HHS, reported. Health officials stress the idea that physical activity can start or resume at any age, and HHS aims to put the tools in place to connect older adults with secure chances for physical activity depend heavily on collaboration among these specialists.

“The mindset that physical activity is an individual responsibility is shifting, and progress to ensuring all Americans have the opportunity to be physically active requires a united effort. Everyone has a role to play,” Adm Rachel Levine, M.D., Assistant Secretary for Health, said in the release. “The Midcourse Report lays the foundation for a coordinated and cross-sectoral approach to make being active the easy and enjoyable choice for older adults.”
