Former President Donald Trump and associates were indicted in Fulton County, Georgia, facing felony charges linked to alleged illegal actions to overturn the 2020 election. Charges include a statute associated with organized crime.
"He tried to deny the will of millions of Georgia voters with bogus claims of voter fraud," Patrick Gaspard, president and CEO of the Center for American Progress, said, according to the Center for American Progress. "He shamelessly pressured the state’s election officials who were only doing their civic duty to count the vote. He must be held accountable. This indictment is one more step toward protecting our democracy and assuring the American people that no one is above the rule of law."
The indictment has garnered notable attention, as 18 individuals, including Trump, are accused under a statute that is typically associated with organized crime. These charges are based on what prosecutors have described as a "criminal enterprise" with the alleged aim of maintaining Trump's hold on power, as reported by AP News.
The list of defendants in this case includes individuals such as former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Trump's attorney Rudy Giuliani, among others. These figures were reportedly involved in advancing efforts to challenge the election results, according to AP News.
Politico, which has obtained a copy of the indictment, points out that this marks the fourth indictment related to Trump's legal matters. Notably, it stands out as the most expansive set of criminal charges that Trump has faced.
