Recent investigations have indicated a potential tie between ISIS and the smuggling of a recent group of migrants who were granted entrance to the United States. The news has raised fresh concern regarding security at the U.S-Mexico Border.

According to an article from CNN Politics, over a dozen individuals, who were initially permitted entry into the United States as asylum seekers from Uzbekistan, are now being linked to an ISIS-tied smuggler. Reportedly, the FBI discovered this after the migrants, along with many others, gained entry after screening from the Department of Homeland Security. Serious concern has been raised from the incident, reports the article, as people are worried about potential terrorists entering into the U.S from the southern border.

“Reason number 1,000,000” why our open border poses a massive national security risk,” North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum wrote in an Aug. 31 social media post on X, formerly Twitter, in response to the article. Burgum highlighted the importance of border security for the overall security of the nation.

The FBI is investigating over 15 members of the original group as potential threats, and has not yet found the whole group, CNN reported. The FBI claims continued efforts aimed at maintaining updated screening processes at the southern border, states the article.

The article also highlights the significance of the incident in light of recent political discussion, as the upcoming presidential campaign surfaced major criticism of current border security measures from Republican party members.

“Biden’s border policies put us at risk for another 9/11-style attack or worse!” Texas State Rep. Brian Babin wrote on X.

Tennessee State Sen. Marsha Blackburn also weighed in on the issue, calling for action to “secure the southern border.”

CNN reported that the spokesperson for the National Security Council, Adrienne Watson, said in a statement that no official indictment thus far has been filed against any of the migrants for connection to terrorist groups. Additionally, the FBI in a statement claimed continued efforts to route out potential terrorist threats within the nation.
